Focal Alpha Evo series

Seven years after the introduction of the Alpha series, Focal has announced the next generation. Like their predecessors, the new Focal Alpha 50 Evo and Alpha 65 Evo are active nearfield monitors for mixing, mastering, DJ and broadcast applications. But Focal has made some significant upgrades to the range.

The Alpha Evo series monitors feature 1″ aluminum inverted dome tweeters and Slatefiber recycled carbon cone woofers. Focal says that this new material was chosen for its neutrality and dynamics.

The Alpha 50 Evo features a 5″ woofer and a frequency response of 45 Hz to 22 kHz, while the larger Alpha 65 Evo boasts a 6.5″ woofer that reaches down to 40 Hz. Both monitors are bi-amped systems powered by Class-D amplifiers. In the Alpha 50 Evo, the low and mid frequency amp delivers 30 watts (music), while the high frequency amp offers 20 watts. The Alpha 65 Evo puts out 55 watts (music) for the low and mid frequencies and 25 watts for the highs. In terms of SPL, the Alpha 50 Evo delivers 101 dB while the Alpha 65 Evo gives you 104 dB.

New cabinet design

Focal has also refreshed the cabinets with a more rounded design. The front ported enclosures are made of 15 mm MDF and reinforced with internal brackets to withstand high sound pressure levels, Focal says. The manufacturer has also added attachment points for wall and ceiling mounts, which gives you greater flexibility in your setup. The monitors come with removable protective grilles.

Another improvement over the original Alpha series is the 1/4″ TRS input, which complements the XLR and RCA options. Also, you can now disengage the auto-standby mode if you so prefer.

The Alpha Evo series looks like a nice upgrade to Focal’s entry-level range of monitors. If you’re in the market for a pair of nearfields for under a grand, these should be on your list.

Price and availability

According to Focal, the Alpha 50 Evo and Alpha 65 Evo should be available in April or May 2021. The Alpha 50 Evo retails for €332.01 (MSRP). The Alpha 65 Evo costs €415.31 (MSRP).

I tried the previous generation Alpha monitors before I settled for the Solo6. If this new generation is as good as the previous one, these are some of the best studio monitors in this price range.
