You never know what you’re going to find at Superbooth. That’s part of the fun. Two new products from Elta Music worth discovering are the Polivoks PF3 mk.2 filter and TSC 12 touch-sensitive controller, the latter based on tech from the company’s beautiful Solar 42.

The Polivoks is one of the most coveted synths of all time. A cult classic supposedly made in Soviet military factories, Russia’s answer to the Minimoog had an utterly unique sound. A big part of this is due to the unique filter design, which used programmable op-amps instead of a usual state-variable design. You can read more about it on Cherry Audio’s site, but suffice it to say that it’s wild and aggressive and there’s nothing else like it in the synth world.

If you want that sound for yourself, one way is with a modern hardware recreation. Like Elta Music’s Polivoks PF3 mk.2. Recently updated, this analog desktop hardware filter features two 12dB/Octave filters with four modes (lowpass, bandpass, highpass and notch), a noise generator, CV controls for the two filters, link switches to control both filters with one slice knob, and soft/hard cutoff control.

The Polivoks PF3 mk.2 is available in five colors.

Elta Music’s Solar 42F is unique for a variety of reasons. One is its touch-sensitive controller, which gives you Buchla-style capacitive control over the sound. Now the company has taken this technology and turned it into a separate device, the TSC 12 Touch Sensitive Controller.

A 44HP Eurorack module, it features 12 capacitively sensitive plates and is equipped with highly accurate Volt/octave outputs. The controller allows for a variety of playing styles. It also has an arpeggiator and sequencer, plus portamento, vibrato, pressure control, a quantizer and clock. It comes pre-loaded with presets.

Additionally, the controller can accept external clock input and arpeggio reset input.

TSC 12 is available in black and silver.

Your description of the Poliviks being a minimoog is off. As per the Sound on Sound review of the Pro:

“Although sometimes dubbed ‘the Russian Minimoog’, there’s little or nothing about its architecture that’s reminiscent of the Moog (that honour belongs to the rarer and, to be polite, less original Estradin 230) because it offers two VCOs with cross-modulation, a dual-mode VCF, two ADSR contour generators with AD looping modes, and a dedicated LFO. And, while it can sound fantastic, its gnarly character is quite different from the creamy smoothness of the Minimoog or, for that matter, almost any other monosynth.”

Thanks for pointing that out. I was trying to be cheeky but I guess that didn’t come across in the text. Amended.
