What is Ambient Music?

The term was popularised by the artist Brian Eno with his 1978 album Ambient 1: Music for Airports. This musical genre is difficult to define, and depending on your perspective, its origins can be traced back to composers such as Erik Satie (and his ‘Furniture Music‘).

Ambient music is often defined by its emphasis on sound and atmosphere rather than rhythm and traditional musical structures. It is also seen by some as a kind of soundscape that serves to calm and relax. However, this is contrasted by the occasional use of harder, harsher sounds that can be very noisy.

A synthesizer is essential for creating ambient music, allowing you to quickly and easily produce soundscapes, pads, and effects. We recommend the ASM Hydrasynth because it offers great sonic flexibility thanks to its unique wavetable synthesis technology. Polyphony is crucial for playing chords and lush pads.

Complex envelopes and LFOs, combined with the large modulation matrix, quickly generate movement in the sounds, which is another important criterion. Additionally, built-in effects allow you to refine sounds further or send them into large reverberation spaces.

Therefore, an alternative to the ASM Hydrasynth should have comparable features to be equally productive for ambient music production. The synth is available in different configurations, but the sound engine remains the same for all models. The main differences relate to the design of the keyboard – or whether one is needed at all. Only the deluxe version features two identical engines and double polyphony. ASM Hydrasynth at Thomann*.
