Allen & Heath updates its entry-level DJ mixer pair to the Xone:24C and Xone:2, with the C getting a USB sound card – including audio in!

Allen & Heath’s Xone series is famous with DJs around the world. With its analog sound and cutting filter, the Xone:92 is a bona fide classic, with the 96 garnering its fair share of fans as well. They’re also pricey, so unless you’re a superstar DJ with deep pockets, you might think that you have to deny yourself the Xone magic. Think again, because there’s the Xone:24C and Xone:24.
Updates of the Xone:23C and 23 mixers, the new 24 models keep things in the same vein as their siblings. Both sport all-analog signal paths with low-noise RIAA preamps, while the 24C adds a 6×6 24-bit/96kHz USB sound card.
“With the Xone:24 and Xone:24C, we are delivering compact mixers with the iconic Xone analog sound that meet the needs of today’s DJs,” says Al Crombie, Xone product specialist at Allen & Heath. “The Xone:24 offers vinyl DJs and purists an intuitive, 100% analog workflow, while the Xone:24C adds digital flexibility for DVS, hybrid, and software-based performers.”
Not so Slim
You may remember that the 23 models had a very slim look, with a waist-hugging middle section. That’s gone on the new 24 mixers, with straight sides like the larger 92 and 96 mixers. Overall, the industrial design on the Xone:24C and Xone:24 is sleek and utilitarian. I love it, personally.
You get two channels, switchable between line and phono (and USB on the 24C). Each channel sports low, medium, and high frequency isolator EQ knobs plus assignment to the famous Xone:VCF filter, with both low- and highpass modes, and a resonance knob that goes from ‘mild’ to ‘wild.’
The crossfader is a Mini innoFADER, with three curve settings and an on/off switch if you don’t want it getting in the way of long fader mixes.
There’s also a microphone channel with a two-band equalizer with mic and aux input switch (and USB in on the 24C model).
USB and MIDI
The Xone:24C has the extra digital innards, so it’s worth looking at this on its own. Along with the 96kHz audio, it also boasts MIDI, meaning you can use it as a controller with either DJ software or your DAW. Indeed, the device has three modes: Stream, DVS Pro, and DAW. Allen & Heath suggests using it with the new Xone:K3 MIDI controller through the USB-C hub for “extended MIDI control over DJ apps and DAWs.”
Making Connections
Around the back, both models are nicely equipped, with RCA phono and line channel inserts, a mic in, auxiliary in, and RCA booth and record outs. Master out takes balanced XLR cables. There’s also a Master Insert section for sending and receiving from a hardware effects unit. On the front, there are both 3.5mm and 6.35mm headphone jacks.
On the 24C model, there are three USB-C ports: one for the computer and two ports for
class-compliant USB controllers and third-party audio devices.
Interestingly, there’s no X-Link, which is surprising since the just-released Xone:K3 has it. The K3 does work via USB though.
