Behringer has posted a few photos of their modulation pin matrix for a forthcoming Synthi VCS3 style synthesizer. These are tool-made samples which are a milestone in the development process.
Enter The Matrix
Although Behringer has not officially announced what this pin matrix is for it’s not difficult to see the similarity to the pin matrix on the EMS Synthi A and VCS3 synthesizers. That’s certainly the overwhelming consensus from the comments to the Facebook post. Along with the usual bunch of impatient “where’s my UB-Xa, R9 or DS-80?” comments. Someone suggests that it might be a clone of that classic pin based game Mastermind or Battleships – that’s quite funny.
It took us a year to design and tool this great matrix and the gold-played pins with built in resistors. Looks simple but it’s actually not trivial.
The pin matrix was invented as a more efficient method of patching audio and control signals in a synthesizer. It was popularised by the EMS VCS3 and is often found in software synthesizers as a usefully visual way of routing modulation.
Behringer is a master at whipping up a mixture of enthusiasm and impatient disappointment. Every post is littered with “where’s my….” questions about the particular synth they are interested in. It’s come to a point where Behringer has asked people to stop asking because they are working as hard and on as many products as they can. They bring it on themselves rather by displaying parts of the development process and then saying nothing about it for months. But it certainly keeps things interesting.
