Mid/Side processors offer a different approach and interesting possibilities to manipulating audio. As you may know, these work by separating the stereo signal into Mid and Side channels to let you process them independent of each other. In the case of OSL Side Effects, a new plug-in by developer Oblivion Sound Lab, the Mid and Side channels can be independently equalised, compressed, saturated, boosted, attenuated, and panned inside an integrated processing chain. Thus, possibilities for either subtle, balanced or extreme stereo effects are presented.

Styled with a modern dark GUI, Side Effects contains a four-band mid/side EQ with an interactive graph and FFT spectrum analyzer. Likewise, the Mid/Side compressor is equipped with a transfer curve graph. Tape-style saturation, panning, oversampling, 17 factory presets and full DAW automation are among the additional possibilities. Finally, metering includes gain reduction, input/output gain, a stereo visualiser, and a phase meter. So you can use Side Effects as a competent metering plug-in of its own. The user interface is fairly simple to get around considering the plug-in’s processing power. The Mid and Side equalizers, as well as the compressor are separated into different tabs, while the rest of the effects are a single-knob operation – one knob for either mid or side.

Availability

Until July 18, Side Effects is priced USD 29 down from USD 39 – probably the most affordable Mid/Side processor of its kind. A free demo version is available, which silences the signal every 45 seconds. The plug-in itself runs in 64-bit VST3 and AU formats on Windows and Mac computers.
