RODE introduces the TF-5 small diaphragm condenser microphone
RODE has introduced the TF-5 small diaphragm condenser microphone. The RODE TF-5 comes as a matched pair and includes a stereo mounting bracket. It was designed in collaboration with classical recording engineer Tony Faulkner. What does it have to offer?
After several products aimed at vloggers, podcasters, and filmmakers, like the RODECaster Pro and the VideoMic Me-L, RODE returns to the studio segment with a brand new pair of microphones. And it seems like the Australian company has ambitious goals: The TF-5 is its most expensive SDC yet. At around USD 1500 per matched pair, it goes head to head against competitors like the Neumann SKM 184. What does the Rode TF-5 have going for it? Let’s find out!

RODE says that the TF-5 was designed in collaboration with the award-winning engineer Tony Faulkner. This is an indication that classical recordings are one of the market segments that RODE is going for with this mic. At the same time, the company claims that the TF-5 is “uniquely versatile” in that it delivers “airiness and clarity” as well as warmth and “breathtaking sonic transparency”. Admittedly, these are attributes that appear in pretty much any press release about a new mic. But they show that RODE appears to be very confident that the TF-5 will be a good performer in its price range.

Cardioid polar pattern and low noise
The RODE TF-5 features a cardioid polar pattern. Rode says that the microphone’s new capsule has been “precision-engineered to sub-micron tolerances”. This ensures an “unprecedented consistency of tone and response”, according to RODE. The TF-5 has a very noise floor of 14dBA, a signal-to-noise ratio of 80dB and 112.6dB of dynamic range.
As of now, the RODE TF-5 is only available as a precision matched pair. In addition to the microphones, the box includes two clips, two windshields, and an adjustable stereo mounting bar. While we don’t have an official price announcement by RODE yet, the pair is already appearing at some online retailers for around USD 1500.
