Behringer SP1200X is a $200 SP1200 Clone – But What Do You Actually Get?

The Behringer SP1200X appears to be making progress! The manufacturer just revealed the first pictures of the upcoming SP1200 clone on its Facebook page. The crazy part: they’re shooting for a price of just $200.
All about the SP1200X
Behringer SP1200X
You might remember that back in May of this year, several upcoming products were briefly visible on Behringer’s new website. Among them was what appeared to be a clone or modern reinterpretation of the legendary E-mu SP1200, although a picture was still missing at that point.
That’s changed now: Behringer just revealed the first pictures of the upcoming SP1200X on its Facebook page. For anyone looking for an affordable alternative to the famous vintage sampler, that’s of course excellent news!
There’s not much other info yet. To me, the design looks like a cross between the vintage original and the S2400 from Isla Instruments, although it isn’t a carbon copy of either.
Sampler with an Open Source Architecture
While Behringer has yet to share details about the sampler’s features, we do know that the SP1200X will be open source, just like the recently announced KICK groovebox and IGNITE sequencer. In the age of vibe coding, Behringer seems to be embracing the concept of selling you the hardware and relying on the community to do the rest. So it remains to be seen what the SP1200X will be able to do out of the box, and what features the community will come up with.
The price is another indication that Behringer plans to rely heavily on the community for firmware development. According to the Facebook post, the SP1200X will cost a mere $200. While that sounds like a killer deal, it remains to be seen what you’ll actually get for that price. Will it be a finished device or just a shell for you to go wild with AI vibe coding?
