JHS 3 Series
Josh Scott‘s pedal company has been slowly expanding its ‘affordable’ 3 Series pedal range over the last few years, creating utilitarian-looking but great-sounding classic effects at an affordable price point.
These plain white pedals are now moving into less ‘bread and butter’ effects like delay, chorus, and overdrive, with the announcement of the new Bit Crusher, Ring Modulator, and Glitch Delay models.
They are also going to appeal to any musician who wants to get a bit extreme with processing and will work well on synths, drum machines, and even vocals.
Digital Destruction
JHS Pedals wants you to try some tonal destruction and explore the realms of digital glitching, sample rate reduction, and high-frequency modulation ringing with musicians.
Let’s take a closer look at each one in a little more detail.
Glitch Delay
The Glitch Delay is based on a clear idea: delay shouldn’t sound static, but rather lively and surprising. Inspired by the Line 6 DL-4 and the atmospheric, distorted delay sounds of Bill Frisell , the pedal keeps the actual delay time stable, while random glitch events change the playback speed in real time.
Key features:
• Time control: from 20 ms to 980 ms
• Glitch control: from classic delay to a 50% glitch probability
• Repeats control: adds musical modulation as the setting increases
• Internal limiter: enables endless feedback without getting out of control
• Mix switch: selects between 35% and 80% delay level
With the Glitch control fully counter-clockwise, the pedal functions as a warm-sounding, classic delay. Turning it clockwise makes the effect increasingly experimental, while the LED visibly accompanies the glitch events.
Ring Modulator
The second candidate would be the 3 Series Ring Modulator. This conjures up everything from subtle, almost inaudible modulation to metallic chaos. Despite its experimental nature, it remains pleasingly accessible thanks to its clear operation.
Key features:
• Blend control: mixes ring modulation and dry signal
• Frequency control: determines the speed of the oscillator
• Mode switch: selects between two sound algorithms
• Tweak control: extends the modulation with additional movement
The two available modes are particularly interesting.
This one is inspired by the discontinued Way Huge Ringworm. The Tweak control adds an additional LFO, giving the sound more wobble and liveliness.
The Green Lantern mode is based on the Green Ringer circuit. Here, the pedal generates a natural-sounding octave effect in addition to ring modulation. The Tweak control allows you to mix in the octave effect from 0% to 100%.
Bitcrusher
The Bitcrusher is a well-known tool for anyone who wants to intentionally use digital distortion. It reduces both the bit depth and the sample rate, then shapes the result using a filter. In their demo, it sounds almost like an early Tone Bender-style fuzz at certain settings, so make sure you check it out.
Key features:
• Crush control: from 24 bits down to 1 bit
• Sample rate control: from 32.768 kHz down to 2.5 Hz
• Filter control: shapes the sound and determines the filtering
• Type switch: selects between two filter characters
A mini toggle switch selects between two filter types, which have a significant impact on the pedal’s basic sound.
Price & Availability
With its Glitch Delay, Ring Modulator, and Bitcrusher, the JHS Pedals 3 Series proves that experimental effects don’t have to be complicated. All three pedals offer easy operation yet deliver very unique sounds. At just $124/£109/€126 each, the price is fantastic. The build quality is excellent.
