More than any other piece of equipment, SSL is known for the SL 4000 Series consoles and the way that they dominated the recording industry for over 30 years. During this time, several musical golden eras came and went, and the 4000 Series was there to create the characteristic sound of Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, and RnB.
SSL 4K Bundle
The 4K Bundle brings together the sound from three of the most renowned consoles in three distinctive flavours. The first was the B Series, which was strictly for the early adopters, as only six of these consoles were ever built. Introduced back in 1976, the B Series used Jensen transformers and dbx 202 “Gold Can” VCAs, which gave it the colourful, saturated sound, especially when driven.
At this time, pioneering artists like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins stumbled upon the sound of gated reverb, which would define music for most of the next decade. Next in line is the famous E Series, released in 1979, which became the industry standard for mixing records due to the accuracy of its automation system and the routing flexibility it offered producers and engineers.
Known for its gritty character and punch, “Black Knob” EQ and more refined Class-A VCA saturation, the E Series helped shape the sound of Pop records for years to come. Then, in 1987, SSL released the G Series, a console that is still regarded by some engineers as the pinnacle of mixing console design.
With its more precise sonics and “Pink Knob” EQ, the G Series became the definitive choice for mixing Rock and Metal records from the early 1990s onwards. With the choice of all three flavours in the SSL 4K Bundle and the flexibility of the DAW environment, you can mix and match the channel strip models to suit the sound you’re creating in your mixes.
