The Flat-top Guitar has Deep Roots
The Gibson Century Collection has an interesting history. Gibson’s journey with the flat-top guitar began in 1926 with the introduction of the L-1, which had the body shape of an archtop guitar. This was essentially a cost-saving measure at the time, as raw materials were scarce and expensive due to economic crises and wars.
This simple yet significant change resulted in seven unique acoustic platforms and paved the way for musical styles such as Delta blues, country, bluegrass, folk, and Americana. Gibson’s acoustic guitars have shaped not only musical heritage but also Gibson’s design principles today.
The Gibson Century Collection
The Gibson Century Collection is being produced once again, focusing on the proportions and principles that made the original instruments such coveted antiques. Features of the new collection include:
- Lower-set 12-fret necks for better accessibility
- Perfect bridge placement at the heart of the top
- Featherweight construction and bracing
- A thin satin nitrocellulose finish for an authentic look and sound
- A unique Gibson scale that gives the guitars their characteristic sound
A special highlight is the elegant, Art Deco-style tweed case that stylishly protects these valuable instruments.

Market Launch and Prices
The Gibson Century Collection models, including the L-00, J-45, and J-185, are set to launch in April 2026. The expected price is just over $2,000, and the guitars will, of course, be manufactured in the USA. We will notify you as soon as they are available.
