Nearly all classic drum machines of the Roland TR series have been available as plugins in Roland Cloud for some time now. However, the one that started it all was still missing. That’s changed now: Just before NAMM 2026, Roland has released the CR-78 plugin!
The CR-78 Software Rhythm Composer emulates Roland’s first programmable drum machine using the manufacturer’s acclaimed ACB technology (Analog Circuit Behavior). According to Roland, this method authentically recreates the sound of the original vintage hardware.
Released in 1978, the CR-78 was groundbreaking, but rather limited. The CR-78 plugin offers a number of enhancements and new features to make it infinitely more usable in a modern environment. For example, there’s a Pattern view that lets you edit grooves down to the last detail, including instrument parameters such as tuning and decay. The Kit view provides access to mixing parameters such as pan, mute/solo, and output routing.
Just in case you feel nostalgic, Roland has also included two photo-realistic skins for an authentic vintage look and feel. You can choose between the two case variants the CR-78 shipped with during its production run: a wooden case and a version covered in black vinyl.
Price and Compatibility
The Roland CR-78 plugin is available as part of the Roland Cloud Ultimate membership, but you can also purchase an individual lifetime key. As an introductory offer, it’s now available for just $49 instead of $149 – that’s a 75% discount!
The plugin runs on macOS 13 or higher and Windows 11 or higher in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
