Ah, compression pedals. Many players avoid them, seeing no need for them as their drives and amps offer plenty of compression already. However, once you have one and experience the endless sustain and snappy ducking it provides, you won’t ever go back. For many bassists in particular, compressor pedals are an essential part of their sound.

Since its release in 2017, the Kongpressor has gained a large fan base, establishing it as a key product in Orange’s range. The Orange King Comp ups the ante, not just visually. The main difference lies in the type of compression.

While the Kongpressor is a guey opto-compressor in the style of an LA-2A, the Orange King Comp uses a crisp VCA circuit for compression, for rapid squeezing and pushing. In terms of sound, this makes it a more aggressive but also more transparent type of dynamics processor.

18V Headroom, Buffered Bypass

In terms of controls, the Orange King Comp offers the standard features of any compressor pedal: attack, release, compression (ratio), and volume, all in a mono signal path. As a Class A VCA compressor, the King Comp acts fast and transparent above all else.

You can play with extreme dynamics here, and the loudest peaks are attenuated rapidly with low attack values. When you turn up the volume to compensate, your signal remains virtually noise-free. King Comp’s noise floor is so low that it is virtually inaudible. And if you’re looking for endless sustain, just increase the release time.

In addition to its magnificent, King Kong-esque finish, its particularly large headroom of 18 volts is especially noteworthy. This means that, even when you put it after a boost or loud overdrive, the King Comp will capture the loudest peaks with extreme clarity. According to the manual, Orange recommends using the pedal at the very beginning of your chain or directly after the first distortion pedals due to buffered bypass.

How much does the Orange King Comp cost?

You can get the Orange King Comp for $175.00 / £158.00 / €179.00 at Thomann*. There is currently a five to seven-week wait.
