Behringer BM-12 Ring Modulator: More Moogerfooger-style Madness
Another Moogerfooger emulation for Behringer
The BM-12 Ring Modulator is Behringer’s latest take on the Moog pedal series, based on the ring modulator pedal from the 1990s.
BM-12 Ring Modulator
Behringer appears to be releasing all the Moogerfooger pedals. We have already seen the MURF and the Phaser; now we have the BM-12 Ring Modulator. They teased a prototype version of this pedal back in 2023, and today it has finally been officially announced as a production model.
It follows the same format as the previous two Moogerfooger-style pedal releases of an analog circuit enclosed in a large-format pedal with wooden side panels. Making it an almost one-to-one clone visually of the original 1990s pedal by Moog.
Ring Modulation
Ring Modulation produces a metallic, bell-like tone, which is often associated with synthesizers of the 1970s in my mind. It uses a modulator and a carrier signal to modulate the amplitude of the signal, and the sum of the two frequencies provides the metallic effect. The faster the carrier, the more metallic-sounding it all becomes.
This pedal version also has an LFO for modulation. This can be used to add some movement to the sound. Perfect for producing all manner of 1960s & 70s Dr Who-style noises and more.
It will work great with synths, guitars, and bass guitar. The controls consist of Drive, Mix, Frequency, Amount, and Rate, with switches for Modulator (Hi/Lo) and LFO (Square/Sine). With LEDs for indicating the Effect On, LFO, and Level.
The Drive control selectively overdrives the preamp, is now located separately above the modulator and LFO parameters.
There is then a set of inputs and outputs on the rear of the pedal for expression pedals, these include: Audio In, Rate, Amount, Mix, Freq, Audio Out, LFO Out, Carrier In, and Carrier Out. All of this makes this pedal perfect for audio manipulation and experimentation in the studio.
Price & Availability
The pedal is priced at $116/£102/€119 and is available to pre-order now at Thomann. It won’t be available for a few months, so preorder if you want one of the first batch. If you’ve been waiting since 2023, then a few more months waiting should be fine.
