SoundCloud has announced a new DTC vinyl pressing service.
The SoundCloud x elasticStage collaboration provides you with an on-demand direct-to-consumer vinyl pressing and distribution service.
Ever wanted your tracks released on vinyl so your fans can enjoy physical copies? For decades, vinyl records have provided a more personal, physical example of a musical product, and now SoundCloud is making it easier than ever for artists and labels to get their music on wax.

If you’ve investigated the process of getting your own vinyl releases pressed and distributed, it can be a costly affair. However, SoundCloud’s new partnership with elasticStage takes out all the financial risk and makes it a simple step-by-step process. All you have to do is submit your record release for review, with a selection of tracks, with their respective credits, and the artwork.
Once approved, SoundCloud will then create a unique webpage where fans can order your latest EP or album. All you have to do is let them know where to get it, while SoundCloud x elasticStage takes care of shipping each order and paying you out for the proceeds. There are certainly advantages to this model for artists and labels, because you could use this service to test if fans and DJs want a particular release on vinyl, the same way white labels worked back in the day.
There will, of course, be those purists who wouldn’t take this service seriously for several reasons. In certain music styles, the prestige and value of a vinyl release lie in the quality of the pressing and the fact that there are limited copies available. While vinyl on demand is convenient for fans and DJs who love playing and listening to vinyl, not every pressing is equal in quality, and you have no control over this.

Another aspect is on the financial side. The percentage split paid out to artists with each copy sold will naturally be far lower than if you paid for your own pressing of 300 units up front. Obviously, the risk is higher, but you can go all in on the artwork with a picture disk and really create something worth owning for your fans. However, there is a royalties calculator on elasticstage.com, so be sure to check this out.
