Roadie 4: Robot Tuning Reaches the 4th Generation
Faster, more accurate tuning? Roadie 4 could help
Roadie 4 is the latest iteration of the smart guitar tuner from Band Industries. This new, improved version is about to launch on Kickstarter and brings some neat enhancements to the smart tuner product line.
Roadie 4
The Roadie 4 seeks to improve upon the design of their previous versions, and they state that it does this by using completely re-engineered algorithms and upgraded audio circuitry. I had a chance to review the Roadie 2 when that model launched back in 2018, and they have also released an enhanced Roadie 3 model since then.
What’s New?
How are they making tuning even better? Well, as I have written above, they have given this latest version a new algorithm and upgraded the audio circuitry. Plus, this new version now comes with a larger 1.9-inch full-colour LCD screen that offers over twice the display area for crystal-clear visibility during tuning.
Intuitive Navigation
Another part of the redesign is the new scroll wheel, which they state enables lightning-fast selection and navigation through settings and instruments. I found the version that I reviewed could be a little problematic and would often skip, so hopefully, this will make the Roadie 4 simpler to navigate.
They have also redesigned the peg connector asp that it will accommodate a wider range of tuning pegs, both larger and smaller. The design of the unit has also been made taller, with an anti-slip backing with a more ergonomic profile.
Tuning
Pluck any string, and the device will automatically detect which string you’re on, tune it precisely, and notify you with a vibration and audible beep when it’s in tune. This is useful if you have to retune a lot of guitars, so perfect for anyone who works as a roadie with bands, or who manages a lot of guitars.
They also state that Roadie 4 excels at winding new strings quickly and accurately, making string changes a breeze for virtually any instrument with geared pegs, including electric and acoustic guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, and banjos.
Rechargeable
It uses a rechargeable battery which can be charged using USB-C, and so a great little tool for your gigbag. The accompanying app for your smartphone allows you to save custom tunings and set up various instruments to your favourite tunings.
