Sonicware returns with a new addition to their ever-popular LIVEN range. The LIVEN Evoke continues in the same vein as Ambient Ø, this time focusing on acoustic sounds.

Sonicware have been a bit quiet of late. I mean, we can’t begrudge them a little downtime after a very busy 2024. But then, just last week, a new firmware appeared for their SmplTrek portable, sample-based composer. And now we have another in the ever-expanding LIVEN range of portable synth grooveboxes.

The LIVEN Ambient Ø was a great success and gained many fans with its approach to ambient soundscaping. Building on that success, the LIVEN Evoke claims to bring a different approach to the genre. Different enough, we hope to make it stand out in its own right, as well as complement its predecessor.

The Sonicware LIVEN Evoke

Evoke brings a brand new synth engine to the table. The Acoustronic Flux Oscillator takes synthesized acoustic instruments, slicing them up into 256 fragments, blends them with 20 waveforms in the Harmonic Waveform Generator and then feeds them through a contraption called ‘Backtide’ and finally blends them before sending them on their merry way!

Backtide behaves like a wave, ebbing back and forth as the sound decays away. The resultant output can then be fed through a range of FX, including a granular effect and a multi-dimensional reverb. You can then use the built-in 4-track sequencer to record performances or modulations to the sounds.

Hopefully that helped, but Evoke strikes me as very much a unit that you learn by doing. The acoustic instrument sounds supplied include pianos, strings, wind instruments, brass and chromatic percussion, which can be paired with one of 20 waveforms and/or two noise generators.

Other Features

Evoke’s sequencer can accommodate 64 steps in each of its 128 patterns and features random playback of sequence phases as well as a probability setting to really make things unique. As all LIVEN units do, it also sports its own built-in speaker, MIDI, SYNC IN/OUT and an audio input for mixing another instrument with Evoke.

Sonicware continues to forge its own path with affordable, fun, unique, if somewhat odd products that fulfil specific requirements and, at the same time, create new musical paradigms that are both fun and compelling!
