Arturia’s software development wing is a bubbling cauldron, always cooking up new creative tools for artists, producers, and engineers. Because getting a good drum sound is such a crucial aspect of modern music production, it’s no surprise that Arturia has introduced the Mix DRUMS plugin, a complete drum processing tool.

Arturia Mix DRUMS

Developed in collaboration with renowned producer, mix engineer, and drummer Emre Ramazanoglu, Arturia’s Mix DRUMS provides an intuitive interface that lets you dive into the critical aspects of drum processing, from shaping transients and dynamics to enriching harmonics and introducing spatial characteristics.

More Information

The first thing you’ll notice about how Mix DRUMS works is its multiband approach, dividing the processing into two areas: the lows in one band, and the mids and highs in another. Meanwhile, each area has processing features specifically designed for dealing with the respective area of the drum frequency range. The flexible dynamics section allows you to select different modes and choose which part of the spectrum you want to process.

Both bands have clipping and transient shaping sections. However, in the low-end band, you have the Op Amp 21 distortion/saturation circuit to add warmth and harmonic depth. In addition, the Mid/High band has a tape saturation section and a distortion modeller with analogue, digital, and waveshaping modes.

In the Space section, you can access algorithmic and convolution reverb types, as well as digital and tape delays. Overall, Mix DRUMS gives you a huge range of creative shaping tools to focus and colour your drum sound. Using a singular drum processor like this will also help you get better mixes, as your drums are all running through the same plugin.

This plugin recreates and actually improves upon one particular workflow I use when creating characterful drum sounds in a mix, or for increasing the impact of delivered stereo drum loops without raising peak level. I wanted an all-in-one solution to achieve the retro-inspired but full-range and weighty drum sounds that I get hired to deliver — as well as everything from fully creative transformational processes to very subtle drum bus enhancements. Working with Arturia, we’ve developed a phase-coherent processor that allows the user to instantly dial in a huge variety of tones… Peak control is at the heart of this processor… you’ll find you’re able to effect huge changes in density, punch, and tone without the peak level budging.
