[April 23, 2025] Someone has been paying close attention! The just released update NanOS 2.0.0. for the Neural DSP Nano Cortex fulfills many wishes from the community. This list had grown longer and longer since the release. What’s included?
Everything About the Nano Cortex
NanOS 2.0.0.
The free update NanOS 2.0.0. fulfills many of the most urgent requests from the community. With only one pre-FX slot, which was occupied by the input gate, and a rather limited number of effects, the original Neural DSP Nano Cortex seemed a little too trimmed down. Its amps did sound a lot like its big brother.
However, the controls and features were a bit too limited. So much so, that this mini version seemed a little too stripped down compared to the competition. NanOS 2.0.0 comes with no less than 47 new effects. In addition, both pre-FX slots and all three post-FX slots can now be assigned freely. The optional input gate has been moved in front of the pre-FX. Among other things, you get:
- 3 EQs, 3 utilities, and 8 compressors (including a 1176 emulation)
- 4 wahs, 2 filters, 9 overdrives for guitar, 2 overdrives for bass
- 6 modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phase), 5 delays, 5 reverbs
In addition, the IR loader can now be bypassed globally if you have the Nano Cortex connected to a real speaker. Previously, this had to be set individually in each preset. The multi-effects pedal is still available at Thomann* for 505 euros.
[September 18, 2024] Neural DSP has officially launched the Nano Cortex, the highly anticipated compact amp-modeller and multi-effects pedal for guitarists.
Nano Cortex
It was rumored to have been developed earlier in the year at the NAMM Show; the Nano Cortex should hopefully deliver on its promise of exceptional sound quality and versatility. The larger Quad Cortex has been a real winner for the company.
But will this cut-down version be a great follow-up?
Bad Teaser
Unfortunately, Neural DSP released the cringeworthy SOONER promo teaser video online a few days ago, drawing a lot of backlash from musicians.
The comments section includes, “Guys, I know you probably worked really hard on this. But it’s not good. No one wants to watch multiple 20-minute video teasers for a new product.” and “Dear NeuralDSP, one of your employees believes he is a movie director.”
Apart from this poor advertising/hype campaign, Neural DSP seems to have finally launched this compact, more affordable Nano Cortex without any significant hitches.
Simplified User Interface
The unit lacks the Quad Cortex’s main screen and has basic encoder controls with LED rings for Gain, Bass, Mid, Treble, Amount, and Level, plus buttons for Bank, Exit, Capture, Save, and FX. It also has two footswitches named I and II.
Mini Quad Cortex
Powered by the same advanced modeling technology as the acclaimed Quad Cortex, this compact pedal offers a wide range of effects and amp modeling options, allowing musicians to craft a virtually limitless array of tones.
Rear Panel
The rear panel has connections for Input, Output 1L, Output 2R/Capture Out, Exp/MIDI, and Headphones (each with its own volume control), plus USB-C and a Ground Lift switch. It also has a capture input XLR/Jack Combi on the side of the unit.
It’s pretty basic. However, it should be enough for most guitarists. The power supply runs on 9-12V DC 600mA.

Ideal for Studio and Live Performance
Apart from the poorly conceived teaser campaign, this new version of the Cortex should be a decent proposition for many musicians.
The Nano Cortex could be a versatile tool that will excel in studio and live performance environments. Its compact design makes transporting and integrating into any guitar rig easy. Whether recording in the studio or performing on stage, the Nano Cortex could be the solution for many musicians.
I’m looking forward to hearing what people think once they get it. I’m also guessing that they could sell out quickly, so be prepared for a wait unless you get in fast and order one today.
This new compact unit should fit nicely into something like this from Thomann.

They completely missed the mark with this. Everyone wanted a smaller/cheaper QC… and instead we have yet another kemper clone.
Can’t load Neural plug-ins like the Quad Cortex. I’d have paid a couple hundred more for features like that.
