The new XLN Audio DB-30 Drum Butter plugin is a multieffects processor with a modular interface for treating acoustic and electronic drums.
The Swedish software developer XLN Audio has served up another hit. Following up on the immensely popular RC-20 saturation plugin, DB-30 offers a platform for creatively shaping and colouring your drum sounds.
XLN Audio DB-30 Drum Butter
The DB-30 interface has been designed so that anyone who has used RC-20 should have no trouble familiarizing themselves with the controls. This processor can add flavour to any drum material, from overheads to shaker loops and drum machine patterns. Drum Butter’s modular interface provides six different modules that can be rearranged in any processing order, except the first and last modules, which are fixed.
These include the BOOM SHACK module for enhancing the overall impact of kick drums, snares, claps, and hi-hats, as well as the SHIFT module, which combines frequency and formant shifting capabilities with time stretching, for Harmonizer-style effects. The SPACE module lets you add reverb from acoustically modelled drum spaces or vintage digital reverb units, while the COMPRESS module gives you an array of modern and vintage compression algorithms.
The SATURATE module has six different saturation and distortion modes to add distinctive characteristics to the processing chain, while the MORE module adds waveshaping and clipping. For creative flexibility, each module has a large macro control, which performs a different function depending on the module.
To ensure your sound is cohesive, there is a range of global controls, including the MAGNITUDE slider, which determines the processing intensity, as well as high- and low-pass filters and tone curves, transient envelope controls, and a clipper. Overall, the DB-30 plugin is likely to become just as popular as RC-20, because it can be used on just about any percussive material you can think of.
