The mighty Quantum has been Waldorf’s undisputed flagship synth since 2018. The second generation followed in 2023 with many improvements, including polyphonic aftertouch. With its combination of extremely versatile multi-engine oscillators and analog filters, the Waldorf Quantum MK2 is one of the most powerful synths available today, but also one of the most expensive. We can only speculate about the reasons that led to the decision to discontinue it, but I wonder if the similarities with the Iridium series had a part in it. Offering the same oscillator technology at a much more affordable price, the Iridium created strong in-house competition for the Quantum. It doesn’t seem that far-fetched that many buyers decided that the analog filters of the Quantum weren’t enough to justify the higher price.

If you’d like to get your hands on a Waldorf Quantum MK2, you’ll need to be quick. According to Waldorf, the last production run has already been completed. The manufacturer plans to continue supporting the synth through firmware updates.

Will there be a Quantum MK3?

Reading the press release carefully, I couldn’t help but notice that Waldorf has only announced the end of the Quantum MK2. This means that there’s a slight possibility that an MK3 model could be in the works. Personally, I think this is rather unlikely, but who knows – maybe we’re in for a surprise.

Thoman does not sell Waldorf to the US, so be prepared to fork over $6,500 or buy used for $5,000. Are you a rich musician? That’s a contradiction in America.
