BEATSURFING just dropped VRAC, a free drum plugin that turns any audio source into a full drum kit. Field recordings, songs, Foley, ASMR, textures, live input: it all goes in, and VRAC spits out playable kicks, snares, claps, and hi-hats with their own shared sonic character. No sample libraries, no browsing. The plugin analyzes the audio itself, finds the transients, and reshapes them into percussion using its own models. I’ve been following BEATSURFING for a while and own pretty much their whole catalog, so I’ll say it directly: this one is a must-download for anyone who wants drums nobody else has. And it’s free. What are you waiting for?

VRAC: How Does the “Drumification” Concept Actually Work?

The premise is as simple as it is unusual. Load any sound, set the sample start point, pick which drum articulation you want for each pad, and VRAC does the rest. Kick, snare, clap, hat: those are your four options. For each pad, you choose the character, and the plugin generates a cohesive drum kit where every hit clearly comes from the same source material.

That sounds like something you’d have to hear to believe, but the engine behind it is a transient detection algorithm that digs into the audio, pulls out the percussive content, and runs it through one of the four drum models. The result is a set of kicks, snares, and hi-hats with an unmistakable shared DNA. Pretty cool.

The XY System: Morphing Between Drum Characters

The XY pad is where most of the hands-on work happens. Instead of fixed preset switches, VRAC gives you a continuous space of drum articulations to explore. Navigate that space and find the sweet spots for your source material, either per pad or globally across the whole kit.

Then there’s the Drumify Amount knob. Crank it all the way up and you get a fully transformed drum hit, dial it back and the original character of your source comes through more strongly. If you want something sitting between “clearly that recording” and “completely new drum sound,” you’ve got precise control over exactly where that sits.

Sources, Shaping, and Global Controls

VRAC takes pretty much anything as input: field recordings, songs, Foley, ASMR material, textures, or even live audio straight into the plugin. That opens up the ability to build drum kits from genuinely unexpected material without ever touching a sample browser.

Beyond the XY morphing, there are global shaping controls across the whole kit plus individual envelopes for each hit. A MIDI groove function also lets you build and trigger rhythms directly inside the plugin, which keeps the workflow from sound design to actual beat pretty direct. And once you have something working, it stays cohesive because everything came from the same source.

VRAC Pro is already announced and will bring auto-slicing, input recording, 16 pads, advanced settings, and multi-output. No release date yet, but the freeware version is already a convincing demo of where this is heading. We’re curious to see where it goes.

Price and Availability

BEATSURFING VRAC is free and available now on the BEATSURFING website. A free account registration is required to download. The plugin runs on Windows 10 or later as VST, VST3, and AAX. On macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later, AU, VST, VST3, and AAX are all supported, on both Intel and Apple Silicon. Each license activates on up to three devices.

Conclusion

There are plenty of free drum plugins out there, but VRAC does something genuinely different. Anyone who wants to build drums from their own source material instead of digging through generic libraries gets a direct, well-thought-out plugin here that actually does what it promises. The XY morphing and the Drumify Amount control are interesting ideas that push this well past a simple sampler. BEATSURFING delivers another conceptually strong plugin, and this time it’s free. Absolute must-download.
