UVI Rumble is a brand-new take on bass synthesis, and it might just change the way we all approach the bottom end!

Bass has always been a hugely important part of music in all its forms and genres. It underpins the melody and locks in with the rhythm. It is almost entirely unheard of to hear a track without a bass part, unless you’re a stone-cold genius like Prince, who stripped it out entirely on ‘When Doves Cry’ and we didn’t even notice!

Bass in Your Face

In today’s electronic world of music, there are now entire genres for whom bass is the absolute focus. Beyond the likes of House, Jungle, Drum n Bass, DUbstep and others, there’s even a genre called, simply, Bass. Kids, eh?

Regardless of your preferred style or genre, bass is integral, foundational and very important indeed. Some synths are synonymous with great bass tones. The Minimoog Model D, for example, is a staple. For many years, Yamaha’s FM synthesis provided bass via the DX7 and latterly the TX81Z. Many of these are still used today.

A New Approach to your Bottom End!

But what if we had a synthesizer whose sole, specific raison d’etre was to make bass sounds only, and allowed you to sculpt those sounds, focusing not on the method of generation, but on how the frequencies occupy the bass space?

You see, bass frequencies are very important indeed, so having a way to shape a bass tone so that it cuts through exactly where you want it to in a mix would be pretty cool. Well wonder no more, because UVI have created just that with Rumble.

Bass! How Low Can You Go?

Rumble is a new way of approaching the bass parts of your track. It’s a multiband bass synth which consists of three engines, each focused on one of three key characteristics:

  • Body (for low end and weight)
  • Character (for tonal identity and harmonic richness)
  • Air (for top end and articulation)

Each of these elements is a full-on, fully featured synthesis engine, each with nine oscillator models, six filter circuits, multiple effects chains, LFOs, envelope generators, two multi-stage envelope generators, a massive modulation matrix and 16 customizable macros per patch.

Everything is laid out in a simple-to-understand, almost Pigments-esque way, being highly visual and very easy to interact with. It comes with the ability to operate in dark mode, as seen in our images, but also a light mode. every aspect of the synth features a tool tip, which can be switched on or off to suit.

At its heart, Rumble is a very well specified synthesizer in its own right, but there is a deliberate emphasis on the ability to sculpt and shape the sound through the shaping of the frequencies. The detailed spectrum shows you exactly where your sound is occupying the frequency range.

It is incredibly easy to start shaping your bass sound through combinations or multiples of the nine provided synth engines which include virtual analogue, samples, phonem, noise, wave-folding and more. The choice of filters is superb and the effects engine is right up there with UVI’s best.

Amazingly, Rumble is UVI’s first dedicated instrument plugin outside of Falcon and the UVI Workstation, and comes in all the major plugin formats, as well as a standalone version. In a world where we are continuously inundated with new variations of tired, old themes, to see Rumble take on the status quo and focus on a more critical method of shaping the sound, is very neat.

Sure, it’s not a brand new method, but it is a new and unique approach to getting a very important part of your track spot on and in a very specific and unique-to-you way. What fascinates me most is not just how good the bass will sound from this, but where people might take this outside of just the low end!
