A couple of months ago, Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL) introduced the Synchron Stage Reverbplugin, which captures the sound of their world-class Vienna Synchron Scoring Stage A for use in your mixes. If you’re not quite ready to spend €149 on the full version, you can now get the Synchron Stage Reverb Lite for free!

While it is limited to just two orchestra positions (1st violins, brass) of the full version, Synchron Stage Reverb Lite includes a general-purpose mode that makes it easy to position your signals on a virtual scoring stage. You can choose between front center, middle center, and back center positions, and adjust the source pan, balance, and stereo width. Synchron Stage Reverb Lite also lets you dial in the desired reverb time and shape the sound using a pair of filters.

While the freebie is of course a bit limited compared to the full version, it’s awesome that VSL has now made a basic version of this amazing reverb available for free. And you don’t even have to create a user account – an email address is enough.

VSL Synchron Stage Reverb Lite is available for macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, AU, and AAXformats.

23DSP 23HotCold: Dual Harmonic Saturator

23HotCold by 23DSP is the free sibling of the MS-23HotCold plugin (which costs only €3, so it also doesn’t break the bank). While the full version offers mid/side processing, the free version is limited to stereo.

The idea is the same, though. 23HotCold offers separate controls for even (Hot) and odd (Cold) harmonics, which lets you dial in the perfect blend of asymmetrical saturation and symmetrical distortion. There’s also a Mix control, as well as an auto-gain feature that helps keep the output level in check as you increase the distortion.

23HotCold is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.

EVA Instruments Kalimba: Free Kalimba Instrument for your DAW

Kalimba is the second in EVA Instruments’ growing Play Collection, a series of simple and expressive instruments that began with a Djembe plugin (also free). Kalimba lets you blend two mic positions (Tines and Resonator) to get the perfect Kalimba sound for your mix. It also offers a built-in reverb effect.
