If you’re a guitarist or bassist, you’ll be thrilled with the new Amp Rack and Bass Amp processors that let you choose from a selection of amp sim models and effects pedals. There are also two new piano instruments in the form of the Verve felt piano and the Etude Yamaha C3X grand piano, which are both available for mobile DAWs with AUv3 support. This means you have access to both expressive and realistic piano sounds whenever you need them. Verve is also particularly interesting because it can produce textured soundscapes with the layers of sounds that are blended into each patch.

Meanwhile, with the 3.8 Update, Cubasis supports Bluetooth audio recording, which is ideal for content creation workflows. In addition, there is audio I/O device selection, and Tempo and Signature track info can now be imported within MIDI files. Finally, Cubasis has a new Portrait mode and offers support for an external display.

Overall, Cubasis is an attractive prospect for those who want to break away from desktop DAW production. Instead of having to navigate and learn a platform as technical as Cubase, this tablet-friendly option lets you get straight to music making, and the pricing is far more affordable.

Besides the usual bugfixes and workflow improvements, Steinberg has added a very important feature that makes Cubasis even more suitable for live performances and studio sessions on your mobile device. Cubasis 3.4 supports Ableton Link, which means that it can sync to other Ableton-Link-enabled software and hardware devices over WiFi. Great news indeed!

Steinberg has also updated Cubasis’ MIDI recording features. You can now place the locators freely to start recording, and there are new Chord buttons for creating chord sequences via single taps. A new MIDI time-stretch feature lets you adjust the speed of MIDI sequences with just a few taps.

Cubasis 3.4 also includes improvements to the State Save feature. According to Steinberg, the DAW now reopens projects in exactly the same state as before, including things like zoom levels, mixer channel width, and user setup choices. This means that you can continue right where you left off after taking a break from a project.

All in all, Steinberg says that there are over 75 improvements in Cubasis 3.4. While not all of those are as groundbreaking as Ableton Link support, that’s quite an extensive list!

Price and compatibility

Steinberg Cubasis 3.4 for iOS/iPadOS is available through the App Store for USD 49.99. The Android/Chrome version is USD 29.99 in the Google Play Store. Additional content is available through in-app purchases.

And if you don’t have Cubasis yet, now’s a great time to get it! Steinberg is currently offering a promotion that gets you 40% off Cubasis and 50% off in-app purchases. This deal is good through February 14, 2022.

All existing owners of Cubasis 3 can update to 3.4 at no extra cost.
