The new GRM Tools Atelier Creative Audio Workbench sound design software is now finally available for your DAW.
If you haven’t heard of GRM Tools yet, the French sound design software was one of the OG plugin bundles back in the 1990s. Although GRM Tools is focussed in the sound design sphere, the plugins have still been used in music production by the likes of Billy Howerdel from A Perfect Circle.
GRM Tools Atelier Is A New Sound Design Platform
Atelier is a modular sound design system that functions as a plugin within your DAW environment or as a standalone app. With its powerful modulation system, you can build your own custom instruments and processors, and Atelier supports multichannel workflows for spatial sound design.
Atelier includes a range of unique processing modules, including eight processors:
- Play: Turns digital sample playback into a creative instrument.
- Gen: A signal generator bank with input analysis.
- Band: A spectral tool for frequency isolation and sculpting.
- Pitch: Change the pitch of an audio signal without affecting the duration.
- Time: A different approach to delay processing with 32 individually tunable delay taps.
- Gain: A volume fader that simulates the distance between the listener and the source sound.
- Viz: A comprehensive metering module with a spectrum analyzer and correlation metering.
- Comb: A versatile comb filter-based sound design tool inspired by physical modeling.
and three modulators:
- Agitation: Transforms a static processing path into an evolving modulation system.
- Control: A flexible mod source for macro control of multiple parameters.
- Peak: An envelope generator that uses transients to create modulation waveforms.
GRM Tools Atelier at Superbooth25
[13 May 2025] With Atelier, GRM Tools offers users a chance to interact with the creative sound manipulation in a very intuitive and organic way. This involves taking seemingly simple concepts like comb filtering or granulation and making them more experiential in terms of the user experience.
The Atelier software was first demonstrated at Superbooth25, where we could see its creative potential as a plugin or standalone platform with a range of nine very specific sound processors. Although even one of these modules can create unique and organic sounds, you can pick and choose to build your processing chain as you like, and modulate effects for deeper interaction between the various processors.
One of the most impressive effects was actually a granular-like sampling effect called GRMplay. This requires an audio file to be inserted as the source material, and then you can create multiple playheads that play back different parts of the waveform simultaneously, creating a polyphonic, drone-like effect from vocal source material. What’s more, by zooming in or out, you can change the timbre of the sound, as you loop longer or shorter pieces of the source audio file.
Overall, Atelier is an exciting addition to your DAW, especially if you’re looking for new ways to conjure up unique sounds.
