The Minilogue XD is turning out to be a bit of a special synthesizer. Now Korg has released it from the shackles of a keyboard and turned it into a good looking desktop synth.

We already know that it’s good. The 2 VCOs plus a Multi-Engine custom oscillator, the new filter design, 2 envelopes, 1 VCA and 1 LFO. All that is working well for us in this compact 4 voice polyphonic hybrid synthesizer. We appreciate the range of sounds, we like the digital effects and completely love that little OLED screen showing us the waveform. The 16-step sequencer is very cool along with automation recording. It’s all good stuff, we need no convincing about this synthesizer as a whole. So what does the module version do for us?

First of all, it’s space saving and cost saving. If you didn’t like the slightly petite keyboard then now you can use your main MIDI controller without an integrated keyboard getting in the way. But there’s a special little trick on the module that with a switch you can turn the sequencer buttons into a playable (!) keyboard. That initially seems a bit silly but then if you are mostly into the sequencer then what else do you really need?

The other big feature is poly-chaining. This is the ability to wire two Minilogue XDs together to form a larger synth. So if you already have the keyboard version you can add the module and enjoy 8 voice polyphony. You can do this for any combination of keyboard or module versions. Although if you don’t have a Minilogue XD already then perhaps the Prologue would be a better choice.

The Minilogue XD Module looks great, I’m loving the wooden panels and the console vibe. It’s priced at $549 which is not a whole lot cheaper than the keyboard version which currently goes for around $619. I think $499 would have been the perfect sweet spot. It should be available in July.
