POPlab’s new Modern Live-Drums collection is available for Ableton Live’s Drum Racks, Logic Pro’s Drum Machine Designer, MPC2 Expansion, and 24-bit .WAV, and as a Kontakt Instrument, which requires downloading and installing Kontakt Player 8, part of the free Komplete Start bundle from Native Instruments.
The curated collection offers 20 drum kits based on songs from top artists like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Dean, and Bruno Mars, which have been carefully reverse-engineered and divided into three categories: light, punchy, and big. To distinguish the sound from electronic drums, the kits are created with professional multi-sampling techniques using round-robin variations.
For each kit, there are 12 drums mapped across the keyboard with up to five variations per sound to give repeated notes that live, organic feel. The snare drum is divided into two layers, where you can adjust the levels of the dry hits, reverb tails, and fill variations to suit your track. What’s more, each preset has a stylistic MIDI beat that you can drag into your arranger as a starting point.
No matter which format you use, Modern Live-Drums lets you shape the sounds individually and globally, so you can match the natural feel of the drumbeat perfectly with your track. Overall, this is a great way to get the sounds of some popular Pop songs into your DAW workflow, and there are formats to suit a wide range of users.
