Unfiltered Audio has released BattleFX, a free plugin that pulls the send effects from the drum plugin Battalion* out into a standalone format. You get Shatter Delay and Headspace Reverb in one plugin, plus a handful of extras that make this a genuinely interesting freeware download.

What BattleFX Actually Is

Battalion users had been asking for this for a while: the send effects from the drum plugin, usable on their own in any DAW. Unfiltered Audio delivered, and made it free on top of that.

BattleFX combines the Shatter Delay and Headspace Reverb from Battalion in a single plugin, but expands both with additional parameters. You can mix them independently, mute or solo each effect, or use just one at a time. In that sense, you’re really getting two solid effects in one download.

More Information

Both effects share a useful trick: an adjustable sample rate parameter that goes beyond basic bitcrusher territory and actually manipulates the sonic behavior of the effect DSP. Shatter Delay also has a Glitch parameter for livelier, less predictable echoes, plus ducking and stereo options. Headspace Reverb draws on extended algorithms from the SILO plugin, offers ten switchable modes, and both effects come with Tilt controls for additional tonal shaping.

The Choke Function Is Where It Gets Interesting

BattleFX also includes a Maximize and EQ section for extra signal coloring, but the most creative addition is the Choke controls. These let you rhythmically vary the buffer of both the delay and reverb, including with euclidean patterns. That’s not something you find in most comparable plugins, and it opens up rhythmic effect possibilities that go well beyond standard time-based processing.

Battalion is an extremely good VSTi. Perhaps its only drawback is that it is “too much”. For me, it is a bit overly complicated in the sense that it can do too much. With half as many features, it would still be an excellent drum machine – but honestly, it already goes beyond the concept of a traditional drum machine. So I can only say good things about it, it is an exceptional tool! I will definitely download the effect mentioned in the article. Huge respect to the guys!
