Turntable DJs working with DVS systems: check this out. Devious Pocket is a new standalone DVS device that works without a laptop. It also doesn’t need proprietary library software. All it requires is a USB and control vinyl.
Currently in funding on Indiegogo, Devious Pocket developer NAP Works promises that the Digital Vinyl System product makes “digital vinyl playback as simple as dropping a needle on a record. No laptops. No library software. No setup. Just plug in a USB stick, select a track, and place the needle on your control record to play.”
Sounds pretty cool. So how does it work?
Standalone DVS
Devious Pocket is a standalone box with optional stand that holds it above your decks. Plug it in and the open-source-based software lets you play digital audio from your turntable via a standard control record. The touchscreen displays a circular waveform that visualizes your tracks like a spinning record. It also offers 1-32 bar looping, digital cueing and custom cue point setting, and BPM lock that auto pitches to your set tempo.
The internal file browser reads standard folder structures on the USB and is optimized for playlists organized in folders, and sortable by title, artist, album, BPM, key, or genre with ID3 tags.
“No proprietary ecosystems,” says WAP Works. “No firmware updates that brick your USBs. Just your music, your way.”
There’s also audio passthrough, so you use your turntable as a traditional record player. And, to make sure audio sounds consistent, Devious Pocket even includes a digitally modeled phono preamp. Pretty slick.
The Hardware
The hardware portion of Devious Pocket features off-the-shelf components, including a passively cooled microprocessor, a 4-inch high-resolution touchscreen, and a studio-grade HifiBerry DAC. The enclosure is 3D-printed, which could be a deal-breaker for some.
While the firmware is proprietary, it’s based on NAP, an open-source framework used in professional audio-visual installations.
In terms of connectivity, Devious Pocket offers stereo RCA ins, a 3.5-inch audio out port, and USB-C for power. On the side, there are four USB-A slots, two for USB 3.0 and two for USB 2.0, as well as a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired connection should you need.
Pricing and Availability
The DVS device is currently available for presale on Indiegogo. A single Devious Pocket costs €249, while the two-deck bundle includes two units and stands for €499. Stands, cables and Serato control vinyl add-ons are also available. There are 23 days left in the campaign. Shipping starts on May 1.
