Full FX Media Diffusia: Free Drone Synth for Deep, Evolving Textures
Diffusia by Full FX Media is a new free software synth that specializes in immersive drones and lush pads. The 6-voice polyphonic engine comprises an oscillator with various waveshapes, a resonant multi-mode filter, and an amp envelope. There’s also a continuously adjustable unison feature for thick and wide sounds.
In addition, Diffusia offers three built-in effects for sound shaping: a tremolo with adjustable rate and depth, a chorus, and a spacious reverb effect.
It may be a simple synth, but the demo video reveals some beautiful, dreamy, atmospheric timbres.
Diffusia is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux in VST3 and LV2 formats.
Playfair Audio Body: Free Two-Knob Dynamics Plugin
Playfair Audio has pulled the Body range from the paid Dynamic Grading plugin ($99) and made it available for free! Designed for effortless dynamic shaping, Body only has two controls: Body and Gain.
According to Playfair Audio, Body differs from typical upward or downward compressors and expanders in that it “reacts around the center of a signal’s dynamics, rather than just pushing from above or below”. The developer says that this ensures results that are both unique and musical.
Besides the Body control, the freebie has inherited the histogram-style metering and the Source Learn system from the paid plugin. The latter ensures that “thresholds set themselves automagically”.
Body is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. To get it, you’ll need to subscribe to the Playfair Audio newsletter.
DAWJunkie DSS-130SE: Revel in the Glory of the Yamaha PSS-130
With its delightfully cheesy square wave sounds, the Yamaha PortaSound PSS-130 is one of those little ‘80s keyboards that, somehow, became a sought-after thrift shop item decades after its release. If you haven’t been lucky enough to pick one up for spare change, this new plugin by DAWJunkie has got you covered.
DSS-130SE is a free sample-based software synth that brings the sounds of the PSS-130 to your DAW in all their glory. According to the developer, all four sounds were sampled directly from an original unit. You can even shape the sounds by manipulating the envelope, filter, reverb, and delay. A trip down memory lane!
DSS-130SE is available for macOS and Windows in VST and AU formats.
