The SSL Revival 4000 is a complete console-style channel strip designed for modern recording, mixing, and music production workflows.
Rather than resting on its laurels, SSL is constantly looking to push the envelope with new recording innovations. This time, the famous console manufacturer draws from its rich heritage to deliver the Revival 4000, a channel strip that combines technology from different 4000 Series consoles.

The signal chain of the Revival 4000 starts with the Jensen transformer-based 4000 E Series mic preamp, with the same circuitry as the original. In addition, there is also a de-esser section from the 4000 B Series, with a 10:1 ratio and a 7 kHz sidechain high-pass filter to tame vocal sibilance or cymbals in the overheads.
The dynamics section is particularly impressive, staying true to the famous E Series design with its discrete Class A circuitry and the same VCA chip from the classic 1980s console. The level of control is extensive, with a choice of logarithmic or linear release contours and a fast attack mode for shaping transients.
To set the frequency range, the filter section has variable high-pass and low-pass filters, which can be triggered by the external sidechain. Next is the iconic 4000 E Series 4-band EQ section, with “Brown” and “Black” knob modes for different EQ characters to get the best results in different situations.
SSL has taken so much care to ensure a console-like experience with the Revival 4000, so you get flexible routing, with the ability to rearrange the processing sections in the signal chain. What’s more, there is an insert point to add other outboard gear into the signal path to get the best recording or mixing chain.
Overall, the Revival 4000 is an extensive processor suitable for any studio, and although the $2000 price tag is steep, it surely makes up for it with the depth of features.
