Millenium Legendary Drumbook: For Kids and Adults
It’s a high bar, the Millenium Legendary Drumbook sets: a drum education book for both kids and adults. Over 120 pages, you’ll learn all the basics you need, from warm-up exercises to setting up the drum kit, to rhythms and grooves to play in your first jam.
After the introductory part, the first 36 pages are dedicated to children aged 13 and under. These exercises are illustrated in a more playful way. In addition, each exercise is accompanied by a video lesson you can access through a QR code on the page.
For grown-up beginner drummers, you’ll start with your first groove, then you’ll learn how to play along with your first two songs. Something I’m a big fan of, that some drum teaching materials gloss over, is a dedicated warm-up section. Plus, the book offers tips on how to practice, from longer sessions up to 30 minutes to simple warm-up routines for just a couple of minutes.
Rock, Reggae, and Fills
After learning the basics, you’ll learn all about the fundamental grooves that many genres are built upon. These get more advanced over the course of the book, with a dedicated chapter on drum fills (don’t we all hate love them?) in between. As for the styles or groove types the Millenium Legendary Cookbook covers, it’s blues rock, shuffle, halftime shuffle, swing, bossa nova, and samba.
While heavier metal genres just like any type of Hip Hop or R ‘n’ B drumming are nowhere to be found, learning the aforementioned grooves will lay a very solid foundation to quickly play just about any genre. Each chapter offers additional teaching material like audio examples or videos through a QR code as well.
For the last part, the Millenium Legendary Drumbook covers more advanced drumming topics like coordination, orchestration, rhythmical ideas, and musical notation. From the looks of it, this will give you a very solid starting point.
