Native Instruments gets to showcase its cinematic sensibilities once again with LORES, a new release in its Evolution series of Kontakt instruments. LORES does something NI’s Evolution team is particularly adept at, which is flipping organic-sounding instruments right onto their heads. In this case, it’s woodwinds, chordophones (instruments with vibrating strings outside the range of traditional stringed instruments), and vocals. That’s a total of 16 instruments and 300+ hand-played articulations to creatively twist.

The inspiration for LORES is the workflow of film and television composer Clinton Shorter, best known for his work on District 9. His musical experimentation is now embodied by an instrument designed as a creative space where recordings are layered within colorful smoke plumes and shaped using dynamic effects. I find the concept quite intriguing, and then comes the opportunity to creatively blend a bunch of ultra exotic instruments I never knew existed. We’re talking Mongolian horse fiddles, a woodwind ensemble, medieval pipes, violins playing makams, and the old crowd favorites (of course) – the hurdy-gurdy and shakuhachi. Who knows what else the team got their hands on…

Throw in some fairly unorthodox articulations which opt for random mishaps in place of disciplined playing and you have an instrument that oozes personality. Everything considered, LORES truthfully stands out amidst the endless supply of competent-but-trite cinematic libraries to which modern composers have grown equal parts accustomed and wary of.

Price, availability, and system requirements

LORES is priced EUR 199 and requires the free KONTAKT PLAYER or the full version of KONTAKT 6.7 from Native Instruments. KONTAKT is currently on sale at 50% off if you need it. LORES ships with 373 presets and 72.3 GB of content. If the world hasn’t ended before my download is complete, I might be able play around with the instrument and tell you a bit more.
