Yamaha MODX M: The Mid-Range Synth Workstation Finally Gets AN-X!
Yamaha’s new MODX M series of synthesizer workstations arrives with a host of new features and upgrades, including the powerful virtual-analog AN-X engine from the MONTAGE M!
Yamaha MODX M
The previous model, the MODX+, already offered many sounds and features from the top-of-the-line MONTAGE series at a lower price, making it one of the most popular mid-range synth workstations for studio productions and live performances. What was missing until now, however, was the AN-X engine, which, alongside sample-based AWM2 synthesis and FM-X, makes the flagship MONTAGE M one of the most powerful and versatile synth workstations available today.
The new MODX M series finally makes AN-X available in the mid-range. The engine offers three oscillators, each with a choice of five waveforms (Saw1, Saw2, Square, Triangle, Sine), PWM, and oscillator sync. Ring modulation and FM are also available. For further sound shaping, AN-X offers two filters with a choice of 10 types, a waveshaper, and a wavefolder. Adjustable voltage drift and aging parameters simulate the characteristic nuances of analog synthesizers.
However, AN-X is by no means the only groundbreaking new feature. The AWM2 engine has also been considerably expanded and now features the same preset wave content as the MONTAGE M, totaling 10 GB. 1.9 GB of free memory is available for user samples. In addition, the revised AWM2 engine supports up to 128 elements per part, letting your create significantly more complex and expressive sounds.
Yamaha has also made big improvements to the synth’s user interface for even more hands-on control and a more intuitive workflow. To start with, the synth now has eight faders instead of four, as well as eight dedicated Part Select buttons. The Scene Select section has also been expanded and Quick Edit now lets you control up to 24 parameters. There are also new dedicated controls for Portamento and Keyboard Hold.
Six new rotary knobs below the display provide direct access to display parameters. And the Super Knob now comes with three knob position buttons (left/center/right) instead of two.

As before, the Yamaha MODX M is available in three sizes. The 61- and 76-key versions are equipped with the new semi-weighted FSB action, which Yamaha says offers a significantly better playing feel than the MODX+ series. The 88-key model comes with the tried-and-true GHS hammer-action keyboard.
ESP for MODX M Coming in 2026
Alongside the MODX M, Yamaha has also announced the accompanying Expanded Softsynth Plugin (ESP), which is scheduled for release in January 2026. As with the MONTAGE M, the plugin will make all the sounds and functions of the hardware synth available in software form in your DAW, providing a completely integrated workflow.
