Universal Audio Little Labs Voice Of God: Now Available Natively!
The popular bass resonance tool is now available for native users.
The Universal Audio Little Labs Voice Of God plugin is carefully modelled on the popular bass resonance tool used by engineers for more than a decade.
Originally designed by Jonathan Little, the VOG gets its name from the proximity effect that broadcast microphones gave to radio announcers and voiceover artists to produce that larger-than-life sound.

The idea behind the VOG is that it creates this effect without requiring the microphone to be close to the source. The magic happens through the use of a 24 dB/octave high-pass filter with a resonant bump that cuts out the mud, while emphasizing the low-end to add weight to the signal. Although the concept came from voice recording, there are other applications for the VOG, such as kick drums, snares, and bass guitars.
Depending on the type of signal you’re working with, you can select a center frequency point of either 40, 100, or 200 Hz and then use the frequency control to sweep and fine-tune until you’ve found that magic fundamental point you want to emphasize. The goal is to use your ears to analyze the material, and you can then add a boost of up to 18 dB.
On kick drum, for example, the VOG is particularly effective, and according to Little Labs, it produces a similar effect to loosening and tightening the drumhead when you adjust the frequency knob. When mixing, the VOG can also be instrumental in strengthening the relationship between your kick and bass in the mix.

Overall, the VOG plugin is a simple, utilitarian processor that suits the flexible DAW workflow. In creating the VOG, Jonathan Little used suggestions from his friend Joe Barresi, the seasoned engineer and producer, but the device is straightforward enough for a beginner to use.
