This Halloween freeware special is set to make the plugin world really dark – and damn exciting at the same time. Three manufacturers are giving you goosebumps in the studio with new, free plugins: PSPaudioware’s Spector brings your mix under control, Playfair Audio’s Body gives every sound physical presence, and Aurora DSP’s Nosferatu sends a real sound monster onto the stage. These three plugins take completely different approaches, but they all turn every track into a little sound horror fest that can be heard (and felt).

PSPaudioware PSP Spector: A SPECTORcular Halloween!

PSPaudioware has come up with something special for producers and sound designers this Halloween: PSP Spector, a precise 31-band spectrum analyzer for your DAW. This free tool is for anyone who wants to examine the frequency response of their tracks during mixing or mastering. PSPaudioware PSP Spector combines a detailed graphical display with an intuitive GUI that omits unnecessary functions.

More Information

The analyzer displays both peak and RMS values, allowing precise control over the frequency balance of a signal. Useful features include the individually adjustable dB range, the customizable 0 dB reference, and the option to choose between different display types, such as lines for peaks, smoothed curves for peaks, and bars and curves for RMS. These features enable you to analyze and visually adapt the frequency response to your personal workflow.

An internal high-pass filter prevents superfluous sub-information from distorting the display. This keeps the display clean and allows it to respond faster to relevant frequency ranges. You can also adjust the peak hold times, which is helpful when comparing different signals. PSPaudioware provides 15 presets that cover typical analysis situations, from vocal checks to final master monitoring.

The plugin is available free of charge and only requires an account in the PSP user area. It’s a practical gift that shows a good analyzer doesn’t have to be expensive or overloaded. The motto fits perfectly, especially for Halloween: Create clarity in the mix before it gets lost in the frequency jungle.

PSPaudioware’s PSP Spector runs as AU, VST, VST3, and AAX. It supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and, of course, works on Windows.

Playfair Audio Body: More Punch and Presence in the Mix – Fully Automatic!

Playfair Audio Body is no ordinary plugin, but a tool that completely reinterprets dynamics processing. Rather than simply compressing the volume or controlling the level, it specifically modifies the perceived energy of a signal. Rather than working with classic threshold and ratio values, it uses a specially developed psychoacoustic model that responds to the perception of “physicality” in sound – that is, what makes music physically tangible.

More Information

The plugin really comes into its own in mixing and mastering. Drums sound more powerful without sounding overcompressed. Bass gains more presence without overloading the mix. And vocals appear more stable without losing their naturalness. The plugin always reacts musically, almost organically, as if an experienced engineer with a keen ear were constantly making slight adjustments to the fader.

The interface is deliberately minimalistic to keep the focus on listening. Body demonstrates that technical precision and emotional impact are not mutually exclusive. Rather than displaying columns of numbers and measurements, it provides a sense of depth, density, and warmth that is difficult to capture in parameters but immediately audible.

If you’re looking to subtly yet noticeably liven up your mixes, you should try Playfair Audio Body. The plugin brings energy where it’s needed – not exaggerated, but with just the right amount of musical intelligence. To get the tool for free, sign up for the developer’s newsletter.

Playfair Audio Body runs on macOS 13 or higher and Windows 10 or higher as AU, VST3, and AAX in 64-bit.

Aurora DSP Nosferatu: Freeware Amp Simulation with a Horror Sound!

Aurora DSP Nosferatu is the perfect freeware plugin for anyone who wants goosebumps and massive sound on Halloween. Designed for guitarists and producers, it gives every track a dark, aggressive character. Even harmless riffs become wickedly powerful walls of sound. The name says it all: the plugin sucks every last trace of sterility out of every sound and replaces it with pure energy.

More Information

The plugin combines a detailed amp simulation with a finely tuned cabinet and microphone section. This creates a sound that is modern, tight, and pleasantly organic. Guitars, in particular, benefit from the precise, yet not overly sharp, response. The integrated gain structure leaves enough leeway to switch between subtle saturation and uncompromising metal.

Visually, Nosferatu stays true to its theme with a dark, minimalist interface featuring blood-red accents that create the perfect atmosphere for nighttime sessions. Despite its raw power, the plugin remains easy to use and responds directly to every change, which makes creative work much easier.

Aurora DSP Nosferatu is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AAX, and AU formats.
