Mellotron Micro Module Now Available!

[11 August 2025] Always wanted a Mellotron but couldn’t afford one? Now you can, as the Mellotron Micro Module is finally in stores.
Mellotron Micro Module
The Mellotron Micro Module, which we first talked about back during NAMM 2025, is finally out. According to the manufacturer, it’s the smallest version available of the Digital Mellotron and comes pre-loaded with 100 24-bit uncompressed sounds sourced from the original first-generation Mellotron and Chamberlin tape libraries. This is also known as Sound Card 01 and is the standard library loaded into the Micro and M4000D series instruments. Note that expansion cards are not compatible with the unit.

The Micro Module offers two layers, which you can play individually or together, with two screens to display information for each sound. It features a High/Low switch, which can be set to lower the playback speed of the samples by one or two octaves, as well as Volume, Tone, Mix, and Select A and B knobs.

Around back, the new Micro Module sports two gold-plated 1/4” line outputs, a gold-plated sustain jack, and gold-plated 3.5mm MIDI In and Thru ports. And, according to Mellotron, it can handle both MIDI mono aftertouch and polyphonic aftertouch.
The Mellotron Micro Module is now available from Thomann* for $488 / £443 / €499.
Mellotron Micro Module! Is There a New Mellotron on the Way?
[28 January 2025] Save space in your studio for the Mellotron M4000D Desktop, which the company may have inadvertently leaked on Instagram. Update! It’s called the Mellotron Micro Module.
Mellotron Micro Module Leak
Update! Looks like it’s called the Mellotron Micro Module, and according to musician Robert Schindler it will go into production next month and sell for $500.
There are quite a few official digital versions of the venerable Mellotron on the market, including with keys plus a rackmount version. However, there’s no desktop model. Yet! An eagle-eyed reader of Matrixsynth spotted what could be an upcoming Mellotron M4000D Desktop unit in two Instagram stories (now expired) posted from the company’s NAMM 2025 booth.

Mellotron M4000D Desktop: Similar Panel and Controls
Sitting between a Mellotron Micro and Mellotron Micro Black is a curious little tabletop box. It has the same layout as the Micro, with two color screens, four knobs and two switches. If it is indeed the same set of controls, those knobs will correspond to volume, tone, and pitch plus two for selecting sounds from the top screens.
Around back, the main difference in connectivity appears to be MIDI, which is in the TRS format.
Mellotron M4000D Desktop: Is it Real?
There is no confirmation from Mellotron about this new product despite it being posted on the official Mellotron Instagram page. It would make sense though. Mellotron hasn’t released a new product in a while (other than black versions of its keyboards) so it feels right for there to be a new instrument. Also, having one that is even more affordable than the Mini would bring the 24-bit sounds to a whole new sector of musicians.
We’ll keep you updated if we hear anything.

This box looks fantastic. I have the Mellotron 4000D Mini. I also have M-Tron Pro, which is fine but the Mellotron 4000D sounds gorgeous, it’s a beautiful, well built instrument. I love it. I have several expansion cards for it, card 1 is the best, all the sounds you’d want.
