Fender has tasked its Custom Shop Master Builders with creating 12 unique ‘one off’ student model guitars to help raise money and awareness for the Fender Play Foundation, whims aims to equip, educate and inspire the next generation of players. And what better way to do it than recreate some classic student models from Fender’s history? But with a Custom Shop twist!

These four new guitars are all one-offs and inspired by Fender “Student” models of the ’50s and ’60s. Eventually, there will be twelve guitars in this special run. For now, we have these four unique student-inspired instruments, made by Fender Master Builders Greg Fessler, Dennis Galuszka, Paul Waller and Carlos Lopez.

“History has proven that many professionals have used the original “Student” instruments to great success, and as expected, for this project, each Master Builder has provided their artistic vision and creativity to craft versions that never existed and are true one-offs. Music Masters, Duo-Sonics, short-scale Stratocasters, Mustangs are just a few of the models represented.” – Ron Thorn

The First Four

The Fender Play Foundation ’62 Stratocaster in Blue Ice Metallic by Greg Fessler has a set of Fender Hand-Wound Fat 50’s pickups with RWRP middle pickup. Then the Fender Play Foundation Musicaster in Copper Sparkle by Dennis Galuszka has a Curtis Novak Tele single-coil pickup in the bridge, and a Curtis Novak Wide-Range Humbucker in the neck.

Fender Play Foundation

Each guitar has a special Fender Play Foundation inlay on the first fret to mark the special run. Each instrument is unique and built by hand in the Fender Custom Shop. All four guitars come with a deluxe hardshell case, strap, polishing cloth and Certificate of Authenticity. I’m looking forwards to seeing what they have come up with for the next 8 guitars in the run.
