Ableton Extensions SDK: Live Suite Gets an Adventure Playground for Developers
Free, Open and Built around Community Input
Ableton has just launched the public beta of the Extensions SDK, an open JavaScript toolkit for building your own extensions for Ableton Live Suite. It’s a free download on Ableton.com, designed for anyone who wants to create tools that run alongside Live and interact directly with sets. Live 12 Suite users can jump in right now with version 12.4.5.
Ableton Extensions SDK: Everything You Need to Know about the Public Beta of the JavaScript Toolkit
What Extensions Actually Are
Extensions run in parallel with Live and can be called up with a right-click from anywhere in your set. These mini-apps can read and edit the structure of a Live set: tracks, clips, parameters, automations, and more. What you do with that access is entirely up to you.

The range of possibilities is genuinely wide. Analyze and visualize sets, automate repetitive workflow tasks, trigger or scramble ideas, connect Live to entirely new external services and systems. Ableton puts it well: some extensions will help you move faster. Others might slow you down to exactly the right pace. That’s a lot of creative territory.
How the SDK Works
The SDK is built on familiar web technologies and a collaborative development approach. If you know JavaScript, you can build extensions, and according to Ableton, working tools come together quickly once you have an idea. The results don’t need to be perfect to be interesting, which is pretty much the right attitude for this kind of thing.
The Extensions SDK deliberately opens the door to a world beyond officially Ableton-certified tools. Anyone can develop extensions under the Ableton SDK license, and Ableton takes no responsibility for unofficial extensions. Their own note on this: please hack responsibly.
Where the Community Gets Involved
The Ableton Discord server has a dedicated space for extensions discussion, exchange, and collaboration. The Explore section of the Extensions page has first examples worth checking out, either as a starting point or just to spark ideas.
Price and Availability
The Ableton Extensions SDK is available now as a free download at Ableton.com. You’ll need Ableton Live 12 Suite, version 12.4.5 or later to participate in the beta.
