Hotone Verbera: Cloning Convolution Reverb
Dual Engine Convolution Reverb
The Hotone Verbera is a compact convolution reverb in an easy-to-use pedal format. It includes an IR Engine, Algorithm Engine, IR Cloning, and can hold up to 1024 IRs at once.
Hotone Verbera
The new Verbera ships with what Hotone describes as 120 world-class impulse responses and can hold 1024 impulse responses. Convolution reverb allows users to recreate real spaces and potentially clone them. If you need to read more about the differences between convolution and algorithmic reverbs, then check out this article.
If you like reverb, this release will be one to watch. Unfortunately, there aren’t many demos online yet, and the official video is lacking a lot of real use of the effect. It is billed as a dual-engine reverb, and on paper, it has some very neat-looking specifications.
There are the standard controls for Decay, Attack/Pre-Delay, Tone/Modulation, Preset, Mix, and IR (Impulse Response). These should cover all your basic reverb parameters and more. Plus, it has two buttons labelled Alt/Menu and Clone.
Reverb Cloning
Making it potentially as super versatile reverb pedal, as it also can clone other hardware reverb pedals (although, apparently it cannot handle Shimmer Reverbs), which could make it your one-stop shop for all things reverb.
The onboard IR cloning sounds interesting, but we have no demos of this feature as yet.
Additionally, it features numerous patches from what they describe as legendary hardware reverbs, so new users have a good base to start from.
The reverbs have the now fairly common Trail function switch for tail preservation, so users can control how they react when the unit is bypassed. There are stereo inputs and outputs with selectable input modes, so it will work in a wide range of situations.
LCD screen
Users can layer and customise these reverbs using the pedal’s intuitive LCD screen, which provides powerful parameter controls, optional tails, and real-time IR envelope adjustments and switching.
For live performance, the Verbera includes MIDI control, an expression pedal input, two footswitches (for standard bypass operation and preset switching ), and an atmospheric Freeze function.
Hotone states it has a studio-quality, ultra-low-latency performance, a pure analog dry-through circuit, excellent AD/DA conversion with 32-bit/192kHz sampling accuracy, and there is an obligatory USB port for easy firmware updates and preset management.
The proprietary PC/MAC software from Hotone handles all of this, so you’ll need to download this to get the most out of this pedal.
Verdict
It is impossible to have a real opinion on this new pedal, as there are no demos online at the time of writing. I would guess, like most Hotone products, that it will do a decent job for the money and be packed with features.
How good will it sound? We shall have to wait and see. The price point is very good, and if it does deliver all that is promised, then this will indeed be a hot one!
Price and Availability
The new Hotone Verbera should be shipping soon and has an official price of $299.99. Available to order at Thomann.
