The Genelec 8380A is the latest addition to the SAM Main Monitor series, a powerful 3-way coaxial monitoring system with extended low-end.
The 8380A joins the Genelec family, sitting directly between the 8361A + W371A flagship SAM system of “The Ones” range and the monster 8381A SAM Adaptive Point Source Main Monitor system.
Genelec 8380A
Like its bigger brother, the 8381A, the new 8380A is equipped with the same-sized bass driver, although in this case it’s a single 15-inch contained within a newly designed reflex ported enclosure. Meanwhile, the coaxial system consists of a 4.875-inch midrange cone driver and a 1-inch metal dome tweeter, all powered by a 500W Class D amp for the low-end, a 250W Class D amp for the midrange, and a 200W Class AB amp for the high-frequencies.
Genelec’s idea behind the 8380A is to scale the level of technology and engineering of the flagship 8381A to make it more accessible for studio users. This means that you can expect the same stereo imaging quality as the floor-standing model that costs around $32,000 per speaker.
The reason for the new reflex ports rather than the vertical slots from the classic Genelec monitor designs is to enlarge the waveguide zone projected from the coaxial drivers.
For mounting purposes, the amplifier can be removed from the speaker’s rear panel and rack-mounted, and the form factor of the 8380A actually shares the same dimensions as the 1238 and 1038, so current owners of these models can do a direct swap out.
Overall, although it doesn’t offer the same bass articulation as the 8381A, with the low-end divided over three 15-inch drivers, the 8380A is still a monitor that is likely to compete with anything in its class, price range, and beyond. Although pricing info is not yet available, they should be priced at around $25,000-$30,000 for a pair.
