Apple is reportedly getting ready to launch an iMac M6, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman points to another 24-inch model, this time powered by Apple’s M6 chip. It would replace the current M4 iMac, which arrived in October 2024. How much you’ll need to set aside for your next studio upgrade, though, is still anyone’s guess.

New Colors, but No Major Redesign for the Apple iMac M6

Gurman doesn’t mention which new colors Apple has in mind. There’s already plenty to choose from, with the current iMac available in green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. Don’t expect Apple to shake up the hardware design, either. Gurman isn’t anticipating any major changes to the enclosure, which means the iMac M6 should look pretty familiar.

And what about OLED? Earlier reports suggest that Apple is working on a 24-inch iMac with an OLED panel, but apparently we’re still several years away from seeing it. Anyone waiting for that sharper, higher-contrast display will therefore have to sit this generation out. The iMac M6 isn’t expected to bring OLED to the desktop just yet.

Release: Gurman Expects the iMac M6 to Land This Year

“All signs point to the M6 models being close to launch,” Gurman writes. He expects the new models to arrive before the end of the year. Apple itself hasn’t confirmed anything yet, so there’s no official launch date at this point. As usual, Gurman’s prediction is based on information from his own sources close to Apple.

Bottom Line

On paper, a new chip and a few fresh colors don’t exactly sound like a huge iMac update. But that doesn’t mean the iMac M6 won’t be interesting for the studio. If you use an iMac as a quick, no-fuss secondary machine for music production or office work, moving from the M4 to the M6 should still bring a noticeable performance boost.

Those waiting for the bigger OLED redesign will need a little more patience. For now, it looks like Apple’s familiar iMac design is sticking around. Whether and when Apple officially announces the iMac M6 remains to be seen. We’ll keep you posted.
