Stylophone’s latest is On-The-Fly Performance Sequencer, a hardware step sequencer with a focus on in-the-moment action. It’s got up to 64 steps, lots of ways to tweak out the sequences, and is Eurorack-compatible.

Stylophone On-The-Fly Performance Sequencer

Stylophone is on a roll. The company’s CPM DF-8 filter module was one of my favorite releases of last year, and the CPM DS-2 synth voice is lots of fun too. The latest in the Pro Range is the just-announced On-The-Fly Performance Sequencer, a hardware step sequencer with a focus on (you guessed it) performance.

Stylophone On-The-Fly: Step On

With the same form factor as the DF-8 and DS-2 (although not a CPM-named device, apparently), On-The-Fly gives you dual four-step sequencers, each with its own pitch/duty knob, manual on/off button and individual gate out (there’s also a summed gate out).

While four steps might not seem like much, Stylophone says you can expand these into 16, 32, or 64-step sequences, with eight live-switchable pattern chains each. You also get control over sequence direction, with forward, reverse, and bounce modes. Additionally, you can switch between 24 sequence memories, each with its own per-step pitch and duty cycle information.

Stylophone On-The-Fly: Step Off

The On-The-Fly offers a host of additional controls. These include musical scales (including Chromatic, Major, Minor, Blues, Byzantine, Raga Desh, Akebono and continuous), and transpose settings, from minus seven semitones to an octave above.

You can also get creative with step effects, including skip, rest, tie, glide, ratchet and random, plus a manual performance button for instant fills and movement.

You may also want control over groove. You asked, On-The-Fly delivers, with tempo, swing, lead and lag timing, note length and gate length.

There’s even a loop recorder for capturing up to 1024 steps.

Stylophone On-The-Fly: Get to Steppin’

As with the other modules in the series, On-The-Fly is made to work standalone or as part of a Eurorack system, and as such includes CV and Gate I/O plus sync and MIDI. According to Stylophone, you can also link multiple units together for larger setups.

Stylophone On-The-Fly: Pricing and Availability

Stylophone has just announced the sequencer, so as of now, there’s no information about pricing or availability. The two CPM units sell for around $250 each, so I would assume On-The-Fly would be in the same general ballpark. As for when it will release, the company seems to follow a NAMM announcement, early summer release schedule. Of course, we’ll let you know when we hear something concrete.
