The ol’ Mad Professor has a new fuzz pedal! It’s a hand-wired germanium affair called the FUZZ32. It’s designed to make germanium fuzz more stable than vintage pedals, some of which have innate problems. The Professor has, however, chosen to offer it in a a very limited quantity: only 96 pedals will be available.

Stable Germanium Fuzz

Germanium transistors are great for fuzz pedals because they have a lovely, smooth sound. The only problem is they are fickle beasts that don’t work well with temperature changes and buffers, amongst other things. But many guitarists accept the shortcomings of classic fuzz designs and integrate them into modern day guitar rigs whenever possible.

Now Mad Professor has a new limited edition FUZZ32 pedal that’s been designed to fix these issues and give us the tones without some of the hassles associated with vintage germanium fuzz pedals.

Mad Professor says his new fuzz “is not as delicate to temperature”. Also, this one has more output and a boost toggle. Yet the price is more affordable than many boutique hand-wired germanium fuzz pedals, which is nice.

That’s all very positive, as it gets a hand-made germanium fuzz onto your modern pedalboard without the inherent issues associated with vintage pedals and their clones. The extra output volume is certainly welcome, as is the added boost function as well. The other controls are the usual Volume, Fuzz and Tone. Simple.

You can hear the new Mad Professor FUZZ32 in action in the demo video below. One thing is a pity, though: the very limited release. I hope more will be built in future. I understand that they are all hand-built in Finland and that takes time. But I would have preferred to see a ‘regular’ edition fuzz pedal.

The first batch of 32 are all blue, with following batches sporting red and turquoise finishes. Given the limited release, you’ll need to be quick if you want onelimited.

RRP – EUR 290
