Do you remember the leak for the Boss RE-2? Initially, the guitar world was sceptical, with some saying it was possibly a fake. Now we know for sure. The Boss RE-2 is really coming. And to the big surprise also a big boss RE-202. Two modern-day Space Echo pedals with no tape!
Boss RE-2
The smaller of the two new Space Echo effect pedals offer the typical boss form factor: indestructible, small housing with dual mono-in and dual-mono outputs. In addition, there is a CTL/EXP connection and an additional function of the footswitch, which also masters “set speed” in addition to on/off. In addition, there is finally a buffered bypass (but no switch to “True”). Overall, however, much better than Boss’s first digital space echo.

Space Echo Specs
In addition, there are a total of 7 controls accessible via staked pots, so only four physical knobs: Echo / Reverb, Intensity / Tone, Repeat Rate / Wow & Flutter and the mode, which can choose from 11 types. Unfortunately, there is no indicator of which virtual read/write heads are active here, it only helps to memorize or listen to the manual. As usual, it can also be operated by battery.
Boss RE-2 Space Echo Delay/Reverb
There is not much to say about the sound. If you love the original Roland Space Echo, you can get a really great sound here. Plus, without any of the hassle of tape and tape mechanisms. Just watch the video below. I really like it, and think you will too, especially if you need a compact pedal.

Boss RE-202
With the larger of the two pedals, there are a few more functions. Boss even reveals how A/D is transformed: at 48 kHz and 24 bits with Adaptive Focus, an in-house technology that increases the signal-noise ratio. D/A conversion then takes place at 32 bit – and signal processing at 32 bit FP. This can be seen (and probably also heard).

The Boss RE-202 offers 12 reverb/delay modes, but a lot more than the small RE-2. The housing is not only larger but also offers more functions: 3 footswitches, each with a second mode: On/Off and Warp, Memory and Reverb, Tap and Twist. Memory is also a buzzword that leads us to an important plus of the big model: MIDI.127 memory spaces can be occupied and managed via MIDI In and Out on the back. There is also a USB port.
